The idea of a sunset in the background of a pride of lions was the inspriation for this piece. The original is a large composition and is perfect for above the fireplace. As a powerful symbol of strength and nobility, lions also represent life and energy. So even while the sun goes down, the lion is still active and watching over his kingdom.
The sunset was drawn completely from my imagination. I was inspired by a fiery sunset I saw one evening. The lions were done from various sketches of lions from the Kansas City Zoo. I used Strathmore pastel paper and drew with pastels and Prismacolor colored pencils.
