I visited Sedona, Arizona and the Grand Canyon a few years ago and was struck by the startling beauty. Every rock and stone was a piece of art in itself. I tried so many times to imitate these grand scenes with little success. The best work was of this silhouette rock outcropping under a sunset sky. Pastels on Strathmore pastel paper was used in this work. Although I did not imitate the natural beauty of the sandstone layers, the openness and magnificence of these colossal formations was well captured.
